Hello All!

I’m a little late getting this post out!  Its been a busy week so far!  I’ve also had some work deadlines I’m dealing with.  I’d love to be able to post everyday, but Mon, Wed, Fri seems to work best…plus I try to give regular updates and tweet my meals on twitter and I’m always posting on Facebook!

Today I wanted to discuss carbs.  Some in the fitness arena would tout carbs to be very bad…..

HEH HEH!

But really, they aren’t bad AT ALL, as long as you are choosing the proper carbs (whole grains, fruits etc) and in a proper portion size.  Personally I tend to do better on a low to moderate carb diet.  For some people, carbs give them energy.  For me, if I have too much of them, it makes me tired.  I also can have a portion control problem with carbs.  I find they don’t really fill me up.  For me, protein and healthy fats are much more satisfying.  I do still get in a fair amount of carbs in a day, usually with 3-4 of my usual 6 meals.

I also stay away from sugar, as I’m quite sensitive to it with getting the sugar rush and crash.  I can get away with a bit of honey or agave sometimes, but typically I steer pretty clear of it.  I tend to do better with alternatives.

On my Facebook Page I posted to the health conscious Canadians. No offence to the American’s or British or anyone else out there, but when it comes to food products, its definitely tougher to find certain items here…so when I find things I like, I have to share it!!!

For the Canadian shoppers, I’ve used this site a few times, they are great!  http://www.thelowcarbgrocery.com/

Here are a few items that I really like! They can all be bought at the site above.  There are many that I would not suggest, and I always stick to whole food whenever possible, but there are a few convenience items that are great, not too bad nutritionally and can help give you some VARIETY in your meals.  No variety = Falling off the wagon!  I easily incorporate these items into my diet and still reach my fat loss & maintenence goals.

1) La Tortilla High Fibre Tortillas

In 1 tortilla there is 12g of fibre and only 100 calories!!!  Unfortunately, I’m wheat-intolerant. I SO WISH I could have these more often.  Hubby sure like them too.  Great for making Tortilla Pizza.  Occasionally, the tummy ache is worth it.

2) Truvia
This is one of the best stevia’s I’ve tried.  It is granular like sugar (whereas Splenda is more powdery) and I think it has no stevia aftertaste at all.  I use it in coffee and on top of granny smith apple slices with cinnamon….Mmmm.  Use how you would sugar packets.
3) DaVinci Sugar Free Syrups
There are MANY flavors available, so it all depends on what you like.  I have raspberry, caramel & peanut butter.  I like caramel the best. I like the Davinci in food, like baked oatmeal or pancakes.  I find it has a funny taste in coffee…maybe too sweet. It is sucralose (Spenda)

4) SweetLeaf Stevia drops

I’ve also seen this product in local health food stores.  I have Vanilla Creme and English Toffee flavors.  I like this along with some Unsweetened Almond Breeze in my coffee if I’m wanting something sweet.  Sometimes I like my coffee black too…depends on the mood I’m in! A little goes a long way, you typically only need 5 drops to sweeten something!
5) PB2.  Powdered Peanut Butter
I know what your thinking, powdered peanut butter….eww gross!  But this stuff tastes really good.  You just add 1-2 Tbsp of water to it and its the consistency of peanut butter!!!!  The BONUS is that in 2Tbsp of the powder (which makes about 2Tbsp prepped), is ONLY 45 calories, 1.5 g fat, 5g carbs, 5g protein!!!!! I warn you it does have a ‘bit’ of sugar in it too 1g per serving.
What are your favorite LOW CARB staples????
